Family Bikes or 'Mother Bikes'
In our opinion, "mother bikes" are outdated. After all, dads also frequently take the kids to daycare or bring them to the supermarket by bike, right? At Cortina, we have bikes specifically designed for everyone who rides with children: family bikes! The family bike is the new name for "mother bike" or "mom bike."
Cortina family bikes come with advantages that make them ideal for use as a mom bike or dad bike. But what’s the difference between a family bike and a regular bike? And when should you choose an electric family bike?
What is a Family Bike?
A family bike/mother bike is specially designed to offer extra comfort and safety when cycling with your child(ren) and all sorts of luggage. There are a few things about a family bike that you might not immediately notice, but they certainly add to the comfort and safety!
Benefits of a Family Bike
A family bike has a low step-through, making it easy to mount and dismount. Additionally, the frame is slightly longer, providing extra space between the saddle and the handlebars. This might not be obvious at first, but you’ll certainly feel it, especially if you have a child in a front seat. This extra space makes it easier and safer to dismount. The handlebars on family bikes are wider, giving you more space for a front seat and more control over the bike. Another plus is the double kickstand and the steering lock. The double kickstand keeps the bike stable and upright, making it easier to place or remove your child from the seat. The steering lock prevents the handlebars from spinning or flipping over. The extra sturdy rear rack allows most types of child seats to be mounted easily. On regular city bikes with a front rack, it’s often tricky to mount a front seat because the rack can block the footrests. However, the Cortina U4 Transport Family’s front rack is positioned slightly further forward, ensuring enough space for the footrests. Every detail has been carefully considered!
Electric Family Bikes
Would you prefer always having the wind at your back while cycling? It can be quite challenging to cycle with child seats, especially when you're carrying extra weight. That’s why we also offer family e-bikes, which are specifically designed for mounting child seats. The Cortina Common and Cortina U4 are available in electric family variants. These electric family bikes are not only very convenient, but they also look fantastic. Front and rear child seats can easily be mounted on these bikes, which also feature a wider step-through and all the other advantages of family bikes.
Frame Size
When purchasing a family bike, it’s important to know which frame size fits you best. Most moms and dads prefer being able to reach the ground when child seats are mounted on the bike. This provides a stable and safe feeling. However, you should avoid purchasing a bike with too low of a frame, as it may affect your comfort while cycling. To determine the right frame size, you can get advice at one of the Cortina stores. Want to order your bike directly online? We have a handy size chart on our frame size page that shows you which frame size is suitable for you!
